 Shipping Insurance FedEx 1
  [From Michelle on 02-05-2002]
FedEx
I am making it my crusade to educate the public about FedEx's practices.

Here's a very interesting fact:  Did you know that FedEx does not sell insurance?  None.  Period.  Doesn't matter what you are shipping.  So when you say "I want to insure this package for $2000" or whatever, and they accept your money, you have not, in fact, purchased insurance.  You have paid for the privilege of "declaring the value" of your package.  You are doing this to let them know that, to you, your package is worth  more than the $100 or $500 liability they have.  However, if the package is lost, their liability does not increase.  I am not certain as to what the benefit of "declaring the value" is, and their counter people never inform the customers that they are not in fact  purchasing insurance but rather are paying to "declare the value".  BUT, when you sign the shipping form, you are agreeing to all  the fine print, which somewhere does state that their liability is $100 for ground and $500 for express.  We as consumers are  responsible for educating ourselves about such things.  Their butts are covered!

So in the future, if you use FedEx (and I never will again), save yourself the extra $$ you think you are using to buy insurance  and just take a red marker and write "STEAL ME" on the side of your box.  It will be cheaper and the end result is the same,  except you won't have the added frustration of spending 3 months believing your are covered and making countless phone calls to incompetent customer service people.

The Collectors Index Response
[Shipping Insurance FedEx 1]

Michelle, we sympathize with you about your problems with FedEx. CJTCI will not ship any items to any of their customers via FedEx ground that has a value over $100.00 or by FedEx express that has a value over $500.00 unless the customer states and confirms that any item or items shipped to them over the limit of FedEx's liability, that they the customer will assume all liability above the FedEx limit at their risk.
