Barclay and McClelland Barclay Jewelry

McClelland Barclay
The name McClelland Barclay is one of the most respected names in costume jewelry. An artist, sculpture, and jewelry designer, he started in jewelry in the 1930s and he was killed in World War 11 in early 1943. From sometime in 1932 to 1938 he designed jewelry and commissioned different manufactures to produce his jewelry about 1935. Not just 1 but several and one of them being "Rice Weiner Co", who made most of his jewelry for him.

McClelland Barclay jewelry is marked that way in his own signature and engraved into the metal and not applied to disc. There was times that McClelland Barclay used just the signature of "Mac" for jewelry that was custom made for individuals, these were usually on one of a kind pieces. The jewelry made with the mark of McClelland Barclay on plaque was made for him using many of his designs in "Art Deco" style, although a few peices were not in that style and a example would be his maple leaf pin. Many of his findings were used by other manufactures and was used to assemble jewelry by those manufactuers. Many of the early pieces of jewelry made by "McClelland Barclay" were enhanced with genuine "Verneuil" man made synthetic ruby and sapphire.

The "Rice-Weiner Co" carried much of his jewelry in inventory and was under commission to produce his jewelry and is believed to have disposed of the excessive stock after his untimely death. His jewelry should not be confused with the "Barclay" company that started making costume jewelry in the mid 1940s under the Barclay name. His work is highly Art Deco and from the 1930s is much sought after because of his artistic design, and later pieces carried some of the same quality as his early work. His jewelry is often reproduced and sold as vintage jewelry using some original molds purchased from the Rice-Weiner Co.
Buyer Beware
The collector or persons starting out to purchase vintage jewelry should always inquire as to the authenticity of the item. Most all of the reproduction jewelry was signed with his name on the small plaque.

McClelland Barclay

Barclay Jewelry Company

The use of the artists palette with Barclay in script and just "Barclay" in script was the most often used mark and can be attributed to the mid 1940s and 50s. There is no connection between McClelland Barclay and the Barclay Jewelry company other then the designer and owner of Barclay Jewelry Co., Louie Marc worked for the Rice Weiner company that manufactured McClelland Barclay's jewelry for him.

Louie Marc started the business of Barclay Jewelry, in the mid 1940s. Louie Marc was at one time a designer for Rice Weiner Co. before leaving to start his own business and closed the business in 1950 and died in 1951, The business was sold by his wife when Louie Marc passed away.
